The Afghan Conflict – A Map of Possible Scenarios

February 2010

»The Afghan Conflict – A Map of Possible Scenarios« is a poster displaying possible future scenarios around the Afghan conflict in a synchronoptic timeline.

The Map gives an improved overview of the very complex question of whether the Allied troops should pull out or stay in 2010 and allows easier comparison between consequences.

The Concept

In a synchronoptic timeline, the graphic displays various scenarios for the future in Afghanistan. The flow starts with a single point in the present which then splits into more and more possible future scenarios based on two major options: the troops stay or leave. The scenarios split and join, or lead to other ones according to events that may take place or decisions made.

The Data

The scenarios developed censequently are based on wide media research and informed interviews with journalists, research think-tanks and political advisers. The synchronoptic format permits an overview of what political observers expect to happen, and thus makes it easier to evaluate differing political options.
